Janet, so sad to hear you were taken advantage of, and I think your honesty will help others. Someone I helped in my work had a parent lose thousands to fake love interests. So so sad these creeps prey on people.
I agree with your theory of scammers using AI images to trick people. However, if you cannot find an exact match of a picture/image, there is also something you need to be cautious of, especially if they are re-imaging your family's picture to extort money from you.
Pardon me, but in my opinion, we should be extra cautious n vigilant instead of going into a paranoid state. Lol 🤣
